Bath - Alfred F. Green, 92 died peacefully on May 30, 2016 (Memorial Day) after a brief illness at Mid Coast Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Bath, Maine on February 26, 1924 son of Evelyn (Pratt) Curran and Alfred F. Green. In 1942 he enlisted in the service (Army) and went on to become Army Sergeant Major and serve his country in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a decorated war hero and was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and numerous other medals for bravery. He miraculously survived the horrific Korean battle of the Chosin Reservoir and yet re-enlisted to further serve his country in the Vietnam War in 1968. While in Germany after WWII he met the love of his life, his wife Hildegard (Strauss). They were married for 58 years and raised their children Mary, Alfred, Michael and Barbara. As a military family they moved often spending time in Germany, Georgia, Hawaii and Massachusetts before finally returning to Bath. After retiring from the military, Alfred went to work for Bath Iron Works for 19 years. Alfred was a Volunteer at the Bath Area Food Bank. He was the first Chairman of the Board and continued to Volunteer for several years. On his 90th birthday, he requested all "gifts" to go to this organization. Alfred was deeply committed to his Catholic faith. He served the church in many capacities over his life time. He was an Alter Server, Usher, and Eucharist Minister over the last 21 years. He raised his children in a similar tradition. He is the godfather to many of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Alfred is survived by his wife Hildegard, his daughter Mary Green, his son Alfred Green, his daughter Barbara McCue and her husband Bob; his daughter-in-law Dale Green, his half-sisters Barbara Alexander, Priscilla Durrell, and Mary Ellen Cornish ; his sister and brother-in-law Maria and Hans Fuessel, his brother-in-law Rudie Strauss and brother-in-law Ernest and Gisela Strauss. He had 15 grandchildren; Kristin, Stephanie, Elizabeth, Mary Charlotte, Alison, Sara, Jennifer, Katherine, Nathan, Diane, Mikaila, Hollie, Michael, Jacob and Lindsey. In addition, he had 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was lovingly known as "Grampy" to all. Alfred was predeceased by his parents, his son Michael B. Green, his grandson Michael A. Green and his brother Edwin Green and sister Evelyn Kimball. He will be remembered by all as a devoted servant – a servant to God, a servant to his country and a servant to his wife and family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 4:00 – 6:00pm at the David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High Street, Bath. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 1:00pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bath.
