Phippsburg - Paul Delohery Doolan of Phippsburg, ME, died at home on March 22, 2016 aged 92. Born in West Haven, CT, he attended St. Lawrence Catholic School before going to Georgetown University where he joined the Navy while earning his medical degree during World War II.

Dr. Doolan established the second hemodyalysis center in the US in 1950 and reintroduced peritoneal dialysis in 1959. He was a founder of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs and helped delineate the field of Nephrology. His 22 year naval career included the development of a Clinical Investigation Center with the University of California (San Francisico), special studies at Brookhaven National Lab, the Navy Medical Center and the Bureau of Surgery in Washington, DC.

Dr. Doolan went to St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury, CT, in 1970 from the Medical College of Virginia, where he was professor of medicine and associate dean in charge of curriculum. His role at St. Mary’s was to help in the new spirit of the Regional Medical Program and Comprehensive Health Care Planning. He participated with the Waterbury Hospital in developing the Radiotherapy Program and the regional department of Pediatrics and served on the commission establishing End Stage Renal Disease network in Connecticut. He continued to serve on study sections and contract review committees of the federal government. At St. Mary’s, Dr. Doolan was made part of operations and policy. He fostered linkages with Yale and University of Conneticut’s Schools of Medicine which raised expectations and extended accessibility in the State. In 1998, he was awarded the T. Stewart Hamilton, M.D. Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Doolan enjoyed a long retirement in Maine where he was a founding member of the Bath Urban Forest, a regular at the Navy Gym and a parishioner of All Saints Parish.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Mary Louise (Rauzino) and his son, Michael Francis. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Hope) of Phippsburg and his children Paul Delohery Jr, Patrick Timothy and his wife Amalie C., Kimberly Ann and her husband, Mike J. Allen, Amy Katherine and her husband, Marc N. Roy and by his ten grandchildren.

There will be no funeral as he will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery later this spring.  However, family members will gather together to celebrate at a regular Sunday Mass on April 10, 2016, all are welcomed to attend.
