Bath- James G. “Chuck” Young, 90, of Crescent St. in Bath, passed away peacefully at his home on March 22, 2018 with family by his side. Chuck was born in Lewiston on December 5th, 1927, a son of Gilbert and Anna Marie (Lommel) Young, attending the local schools in Auburn until the family moved to Bath in 1941. The family quickly embraced the City of Bath as their new home, with a special affinity for Hermit Island where they frequently camped during summers and spent family time, ultimately leading to him being employed at the campground in his later teens.
Chuck attended Morse High School where he was very active in sports, graduating with the class of 1945. After high school, Chuck enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served 18 months in Korea. After concluding his service, he returned home to Bath and continued his education at the Maine Vocational Tech Institute in Augusta.
On October 23, 1949, he married Grace Thayer at the First Baptist Church in Bath. Together they raised two children and continued to live in Bath where they built a life that was full of love, respect and happiness for the next 58 years.
Chuck was employed at BIW, graduating in the first apprentice class offered. He worked in the engineering department for 39 years and retired in 1990.
Chuck enjoyed spending time with his family at their cottage on the New Meadows River, which he helped build along with his father-in-law and brothers-in-law. He referred to it as a “special piece of heaven.” He enjoyed boating, fishing and cookouts. Chuck was an avid Boston sports fan, spreading that passion to his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and, in particular, his great grandson Oscar. The two of them spent countless hours together sharing pictures and discussing New England sports, especially the Red Sox. It was a source of endless love between them. Chuck was also a longtime Little League and basketball coach for the better part of 20 years. His love of kids and a desire to see them succeed is part of what made him a great coach.
Chuck was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Bath and a lifetime member of the Bath Elks Club.
He was predeceased by his wife, Grace E Young, who passed away on Aug 15, 2007; his parents; a sister, Doris Lane and a brother, Robert Young.
He leaves behind a daughter, Cathy Callan and her husband Timothy of Bath; a son, Mark Young and his wife Lynn of Newton, MA; and a sister, Lois Young Hart of Bath; 9 grandchildren, Matt Gallant and his wife Leslie, Lindsey Gallant and her fiancé Jeremy Balducci, Zachary Callan, Risa Callan, Devin Young, Samuel Young, Julianna Young, Kathleen Young and Peter Young; and 7 great grandchildren.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to his personal caregivers, Terri Streevey & Melissa Reed, for the loving care given to our dad. And a thank you to CHANS Hospice for showing so much kindness to us at the end of his life.
Memorial Service will be held on Sunday April 8, 2018 at 3:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Bath.
