Rebecca Roberts Obituary

Rebecca Anne Roberts (Becky), 46, of West Bath, passed away on March 3, 2018 peacefully with her family by her side at Maine Medical Center.

Becky graduated Morse High School in 1989 and immediately went to University of Maine at Farmington for a year with the intent to be a teacher.  Then took a break to join the Army.  Upon returning home she chose to follow another calling that was near and dear to her heart and she graduated from Southern Maine Community College in 1995 with an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science, in Culinary Arts, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa.  She began working at the Parkwood in Brunswick as one of the main Chefs and was soon sought after to be the Head Chef of a new restaurant in Brunswick, Main Street Manhattan, which earned a 4-star rating under her leadership.

Missing her original calling of teaching, she went back to college at the University of Maine and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 2004.  She continued with her own education, earning her Master’s of Science in Education, Teaching and Learning in 2008 along with the ME state Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP).

Teaching was Becky’s passion.  She was hired to head up the first Gifted and Talented (GnT) Math program at Mt Ararat Middle School where she taught from 2005 - 2017.  She used creative ways to capture her student’s attention and teach them to love math as much as she did.  From making clay birdhouses to teach volume and capacity to using cooking techniques to teach fractions and even published a cookbook with her students.  Leaving a legacy of successful students that continued on to college, some even going to Ivy League colleges always sending Becky invitations to their graduations.  She received numerous accolades from her students and their parents as well, thanking her for her dedication to their child and her genius in igniting the children’s passion to learn math.  While at Mt Ararat Becky coached the Math Team, Math Counts and Math Olympiad, all competitions in which her students placed each year.

As a lifetime learner Becky went back to college, SNHU, to study Computer Science.  She worked on line with other students from around the world, creating new, exciting computer programs and games and even found time to teach a fellow computer science student math, allowing him to graduate college (again with accolades from his parents).  Her generosity and compassion for others was felt by all who she came in contact with, even those she only knew through a computer.

Becky was survived by her mother Francena, father Gary, sister Kate, brother Gary, his wife Amy, niece Hannah and her beloved pound-puppy Dorey.  She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Stanley and Frances Williams of West Bath and her paternal grandparents Harlen and Leona Roberts of Nebraska.
