Alice Thalheimer Obituary

Alice Fortin Thalheimer, of Blackwood, NJ, age 91, died peacefully December 12, 2018 in her home.  In Samaritan Hospice Care for the 12 months prior to her death, she was grateful for the care and compassion that her Samaritan aids and nurses provided, and especially the care and love of her daughter Karen.  She leaves her five loving children, Susan Wilson, Alice Iskra, Charles Fortin Thalheimer and his wife Patsy, Karen Cunningham, Sally LaNeve and her husband Scott.  She also leaves her younger brother, Richard “Sonny” Fortin and his wife Debra, many nieces and nephews, and her dear friend of nine years, Fred Rossi.  Alice was preceded in death in 1991 by her spouse and best friend, Harold Reiger Thalheimer.  Her older brother Dr. Victor Fortin and his wife and lifelong friend Prisca also preceded her in death.  Known to her family as “Momsy.”  Alice was blessed with 19 adoring grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Born September 23, 1927 at the family home in Brunswick, Maine, Alice attended Brunswick schools.  She was exceptionally active in Student Council and Drama and all things BHS.  Alice was a majorette in the high school band where she met “Hal,” a trombone player.  They married and began their family in Brunswick.  Harold’s career brought him to Connecticut where they resided in Canton and Simsbury before moving to Columbia, MD, and South Jersey.  Alice enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with family and friends.  She was also an active parent, volunteering with CCD and Scouts.  In the following years, Alice pursued a career in interior decorating, working at Ethan Allen in Canton, CT, and later John Wanamaker’s in Moorestown, NJ.  Alice will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life, her inclusiveness and love for all people, her words of wisdom, and her strong value and faith-based leadership of family.  Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been fortunate to learn from her example and are proud to be members of “Al and Hal’s Gang.”

Alice suffered from a rare form of ALS.  As she was in life, Alice in her death was a warrior and leaving her body for ALS research to Thomas Jefferson University and Temple University.  In lieu of flowers, a donation to the4 Temple’s ALS Hope Foundation is encouraged (www.alshf.org/donate)
