Byron Woodrow Campbell

Georgetown - Byron Woodrow Campbell passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025 at the age of 85 due to a lengthy battle with mesothelioma. As with all of life’s challenges that came before him, he faced this illness with never-ending courage, incredible strength, and always with his signature smile.

As the oldest son of Sherman Woodrow and Dorothy M. (Wright) Campbell born to them on October 16, 1939, in Bath, Maine, he fell in love with Georgetown Island at an early age. Raised there with his brother, Sherman Jr., he became an avid hunter, lobsterman and clammer.  Upon graduating Morse High School in 1958, he was accepted to attend the United States Air Force Officer’s Training program. Unfortunately, a hunting accident derailed those plans. Not long after this event, he accepted a position in the Bath Iron Works Apprenticeship Program graduating in 1965. Byron quickly moved up the ranks in the Estimating Department, ending his career at Bath Iron Works after numerous years as the Director of Estimating in 1991. Prior to fully retiring in 1994, he worked several years for John J. McMullen Associates as an Engineering Change Proposal & Financial Change Manager.

Byron enjoyed being involved with community service as a member of the Georgetown Board of Selectmen, the Georgetown Shellfish Conservation Committee, including serving as the Chair. In addition to being an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed restoring old vehicles, building his own homes and spending as much time with his family on the land or sea in and around Georgetown Island.

Byron is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Sherman Campbell, Jr.

He is survived by his daughter, Tamara L. Janson (Dan) of Yarmouth, ME, as well as his grandchildren Alyssa Baxter (Jon Jaffe) of Brooklyn NY; Ryan Baxter (Allie) and great-granddaughter Avery of Livermore, ME. He is also survived by two sons: Chad Campbell (Kelsie Daigle) and Byron T. Campbell of Georgetown, ME; grandchildren: Connor Campbell, Emma Campbell, and Sydne Campbell; step grandchildren: Claude Daigle, Louie Daigle, Alex Janson, Andrea Barrow and Caroline Tagarelis; several cousins and nieces.

A private family celebration of life will be held in the near future. 

In remembrance of Byron and his life-long love of Georgetown Island, the family requests that remembrances be made in the form of charitable contributions to the Nature Center at Reid State Park, c/o Friends of Reid State Park, 99 Beaver Valley Road, Georgetown, ME 04548.
