Brunswick - Dorothy Babcock Bragdon, 90, died November 26, 2013, her family at her side.
She was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts and raised in Reading, Massachusetts, the only child of Ralph Goward Babcock and Mildred Graham Robinson Babcock. She completed undergraduate studies at Bates College, class of 1945. She went on to work as a social worker with the Children’s Aid Society of Boston.
She married Roger Weare Bragdon, of York, Maine, on September 1, 1946. Their years together took them from his graduate studies in post-war France and then Columbia University, on to his work at private secondary schools in New England and Virginia, returning to Maine in 1975. During these years she worked as a member of the teaching staff at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, and then at the School for Special Children in Bellows Falls, Vermont. During their years in Virginia, she completed her masters degree at George Washington University and worked as a Studies Counselor at a private school. And during her later years in Bath, Maine, she volunteered as a Docent at Bowdoin’s Arctic Museum.
Throughout her years, Dorothy remembered and kept alive the wide world of people that she had known and loved; from the Reading, MA of the 1930’s, to postwar France, to the children throughout her years to whom she had offered a helping hand. Her lively mind kept them all close. Her life and her stories were full of humor, mischief and delight.
She is survived by three daughters; Elisabeth Siek and her husband, Richard, Joanna Bragdon and Sarah Bragdon and her husband, Robert Fong; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
The family services will be private. In lieu of flowers, friends, who wish, may make a donation to Mrs. Bragdon's favorite charities: Paw in the Door Cat Rescue, 14 Winter Street, Bath, ME (207-751-4131), or Coastal Humane Society, 190 Pleasant Street, Brunswick, ME 04011 (207-449-1366).
