James Henry Downs

Rockport - James (Jimmy) Downs died peacefully at his home in Rockport on September 4, 2021.

Born on February 17, 1939 in Simsbury CT, he was the son of the late Robert W. and Clementine Bourgeois Downs.

Jimmy was raised with his family in Belfast who later moved to the Bath/Brunswick area.  He also lived with the Lindscott family prior to spending most of his adult life at the Shirley Drinkwater home in Rockport under the care of Coastal Opportunities.  Although born with cerebral palsy and developmentally and physically challenged, he was active in the community and enjoyed outings and visiting with his brothers and their families.  He led a full and rewarding life and was an inspiration to family members, caregivers and others who were fortunate to have Jimmy in their lives.

He is predeceased by his brother Robert Downs and niece Kristen Downs.

He is survived by his brothers Frederick Downs and his wife Georgia of Brunswick/Georgetown, William Downs and his wife Jean of Taunton, Massachusetts, along with nieces Michele Leach, Valerie Downs and Karyn Caron, nephews Dana Downs, Linwood Downs, William Downs, Jr., and David Downs along with several great nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his long-time housemate Bert, and the wonderful, devoted caregivers at Coastal Opportunities, especially Nancy Robbins.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 25 at 10:30 am at Grove Cemetery in Belfast, Maine.  In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Coastal Opportunities, 35 Limerock Street, Camden, ME. 04843.
