Robert “Bob” Wayne Merrill, Jr., born October 31, 1961, passed away on April 13, 2026, in Brunswick, Maine, at the age of 64, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing.
Bob was born in Biddeford, Maine, to Robert Wayne Merrill and Veronica “Marie” Merrill. He later moved to Freeport, where he attended school and built the foundation of a life centered on family, friendship, and hard work. On July 26, 1986, he married Susan Carol Knowlton of Yarmouth, Maine, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and shared memories. They eventually settled in Freeport to raise their family.
Over the years, Bob held various jobs, forming lasting friendships along the way. He was especially known for his time at Eastland Shoe, where he made many friends, as well as for his many years of dedicated work at Portland Plastic Pipe.
Bob found his greatest joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved camping, fishing, and skiing—especially when those moments were shared with his sons, Jacob and Bobby, and close friends. He also had a deep appreciation for music of all genres.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert Wayne Merrill and Veronica “Marie” Merrill; his brother, Michael Merrill; and his firstborn son, Adam Merrill.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Merrill of Durham; his children, Michell Merrill of New Hampshire; Melinda Hoole and her husband, Jason, of Manchester, New Hampshire; Jacob Merrill and his wife, Heather Merrill, of Bowdoin, Maine; Robert “Bobby” Merrill III and his partner, Jessica Valeriani, of Windham, Maine; and Sarah Bourgoin and her partner, Tom Reed, of Freeport. He is also survived by his brothers, Mark Merrill and Steven Merrill; his sisters, Veronica Merrill-Wiest and Shannon Anderson; as well as 10 cherished grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held in May 2026 in Durham, Maine, with further details to be shared at a later date.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the staff at Dionne Commons for the exceptional care and community they provided Bob over the last two years.
