People pass through our lives who leave a lasting impression and the Cummings family is one of those for my husband Ken and I. Like the state of Maine, they are rugged, independent, principled and adventurous with good hearts and a call to service. Bob walked the talk and earned our respect and love. Our deepest condolences to Mary Ellen, Brenda, Chuck and Steve and the rest of your family. Love Claire & Ken

Bob and I were brothers-in-arms when I was Assistant Director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine in the 1970s and he was writing for the Portland papers. He would call me for leads on good stories and we would tip each other off about environmental threats that were in their early stages, in time for counterstrategies to be produced. This partnership benefited both of us greatly in our desire to protect Maine's natural heritage, and produced a result greater than the sum of our individual talents.

We walked the site of the planned industrial developments, and Bob covered my news conferences and legislative agency hearings where I was speaking.

I trusted Bob implicitly for his journalistic integrity and his deep love for Maine's environment. I appreciated his quiet humor and his absolute tenacity in uncovering stories that many wished would never see the light of day. Working in tandem, we had an influence on Maine environmental affairs that helped counterbalance the industrial juggernaut of might that sought to pepper Maine with many inappropriate and highly damaging developments. Fortunately, almost all of these were thwarted by citizen and government action.

Bob, my brother and co-conspirator, rest in peace and with the assurance that Mainers will appreciate your accomplishments for generations to come.

Sorry to hear about Bob. I spent many hours at his home on Lamont street when I lived on Weeks St.

I was honored to call Bob a friend and a mentor, As a very young reporter, he was always helpful to me covering news in Bath-Brunswick, and for Maine -- he was one of the state's most accomplished environmentalists. And true to form, I suspect Bob had a role in writing his own obituary.

You are right on Steve, no only did he have a hand in it, He wrote the whole damn thing with instructions to my sister to edit it because he wrote it "in a hurry"

Bob was a colleague in the 1970s and 80s at the Press Herald and a model to me and the other young reporters of how a principled and committed journalist can make substantial positive change in society.
