U.S. Veteran

Bath - Carl Kamphausen died peacefully on October 22, 2011 at HillHouse in Bath, Maine, finding release from a long struggle with Parkinson''s Disease. He was a beloved husband, father, son and friend, and although his legacy will live on among those who knew him, he will be missed.

Carl was born in New York City, and spent summers as a boy in Greenport, Long Island where his family owned and operated the Townsend Manor Inn. It was there that his love of boats and sailing started, as well as where he built his first boat at age 5. Carl attended and graduated from Friends Academy in Locust Valley, NY; completed a double major in Economics and Philosophy at Earlham College, a Quaker college in Richmond, Indiana where he met his future wife; and earned his MBA at Indiana University. Upon graduation, he worked initially as an Industrial Engineer in South Bend, Indiana before being transferred to Connecticut''s Uniroyal manufacturing firm. He also served eight years with the United States Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees) Reserves, two years of which were in Bermuda where he supervised the shop, trained proper use of the tools, built a church and in his off-duty time, repaired a Snipe sailboat that he later raced on Diamond Lake in Michigan with his wife as crew. In 1969, Carl opened his own business in New Haven, Connecticut (Uni/Search) that he operated for 23 years and was successful in helping find employment for people seeking middle management jobs. Upon retirement, Carl eventually moved to West Point/Phippsburg where his wife has long family ties. He learned to love the Maine environment; he became interested in the Small Point One Design sailboats and enjoyed maneuvering around the rocky coast of Maine under sail. Carl was also a "people person" who loved to engage in conversations, especially about philosophical subjects.

Carl was a meticulous craftsman who could build or repair most anything. He spent 40 years restoring an antique 1716 Saltbox in Southbury, Connecticut as the family homestead to standards admired by many professional carpenters before bringing his skills to West Point/Phippsburg. He was happiest with a hammer and level in his hands, be it on the ground or up on a ladder, and his work reflected a patient, perfectionist attitude that he hoped measured up to "the talent the Lord gave me". Carl also loved antique cars. He proudly restored a Model T Ford (1924), and he brought his pregnant wife and about-to-be-born first child to the hospital in a Model A. In addition, Carl was an avid Hoosier fan and he faithfully followed the Indiana University basketball triumphs a€" and delighted in shaking Bobby Knight''s hand during a visit to Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana, while later holding a placard that read, "Knight and Day, You are the One". Watching the Indiana 500 Mile Race every Memorial Day was another tradition for Carl. After hearing "Back Home Again in Indiana", he was glued to the TV if he could not be there in person.

Carl was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph Carl and Mehetable Townsend Kamphausen. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Renear Kamphausen, also known as Ronnie, and his two daughters, Elizabeth Peacock Kamphausen and Linda Townsend Kamphausen, who cherished their father for his stories, his practical know-how, his sense of humor, and his loving commitment to providing for his family. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Daniel Peacock and his wife Joan of Small Point/Topsham, Maine; their families; and "member of the family" Petra Doan.

Although there will be no memorial service as requested by Carl, friends may wish to remember him with a gift to the Phippsburg Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 83, Phippsburg, Maine 04562, with thanks for their help in meeting Carl''s progressive medical equipment needs. The Kamphausen family also wants to express their sincere gratitude to those health care workers and hospice nurses who assisted Carl in his last weeks of life on this earth.
