I am one of Jeff's classmates at WHS class of 77.  I was so surprised and saddened when I read about Jeff's unexpected death. I just read a comment on a class of 1977 link on my facebook account.  I immediately went to the obituaries to find out what happened. I really enjoyed the article in the Portland Press Herald and printed it to share with some family members who are appreciative of the same passions that Jeff had. He will be forever remembered as a kind, funny, interesting individual and friend that I was lucky to have met in my 4 years at Winslow High School. I grew up in North Vassalboro and only met Jeff as a freshman.  He was one of our more talented classmates that actually followed his dreams and shared his thoughts and abilities to foster talents of other people that crossed his path. Each person will carry a little part of Jeff with them every day.  His memory will live on in others.

I mourn your loss.  It is my heartfelt prayer the God will bring much comfort to the family in the days ahead.  God has promised us a time when sickness and death will be no more, for we read, "And he (God) will wipe out every tear from their eyes and Death Will Be No More, neither will mourning, nor outcry, nor pain be anymore..." (Revelation 21:4)  May this promise from God give you hope and bring you peace.  With deepest sympathy, Regina Jones.

Dear Pert and Russo families,
I was shocked to hear about Jeff's passing this morning.  Jeff will always be in my heart.  I am SO sorry for your loss.  What a shock.  We all think that we have more time to talk to someone, and then it's too late.  The first day that I met him, he taught me how to draw a werewolf cartoon.  I was glad to learn that he was still cartooning to the end.  His cartoons gave so many people joy. When I was a teenager  couldn't wait to talk to Jeff on the phone.  He'll be missed by many.  Please hold all of the good memories of Jeff close to your heart. Prayers sent your way. The pain will get better over time.  Take care

Laughter is the greatest gift one person can give to another.  Jeff has given that gift to so many people who have walked through the door of the store where I work.  His spirit and gift of laughter will continue to live on through Bob, Shirley, and all of his other ingenious creations.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Jeff in person. As a Maine humorist I am and always will be a huge fan of his Cartoons. As an Airfield Electrician I had to repair lights during the 2013 storm "Nemo". When I came home and saw Jeff's Nemo ice fishing cartoon I laughed so hard I shook my chair.

A persons work can say a lot about their character. Jeffs Charachter(s) said a lot about our work and our State.  He will be missed. Thanks for the LAUGHS BOB and friends. Audrey you can go back to your knitting now. Ruid and friends Write On!

Dear Jackie, Judith, Jon and Deb,

Jeff was a lovely man.  I was privileged to have him grace my life with his humor and warmth when we spent time together the year he moved to California.  I will never forget our cross country journey to settle him in LA to try his hand among the cartoonists in Hollywood.  I have such vivid memories of Jeff's wicked sparkle and adorable self-deprecating humor.  I had not seen much of Jeff in the past 10+ years, but his cartoons are everywhere so he was still so much a part of my world.  A bright spark has gone out of my sky.  I will remember him with love and send my love and prayers to all of you in your grief.  With gratitude and warm regards, Mary Riley (Camden, Maine)

My Heart and condolences goes out to Jeff's family.  We kept in touch ocassionally over the years mostly at various gatherings where Jeff showed he was very comfortable as a Front man.  Always a laugh and never a dull moment.  He was a true and caring Person.  What will always remain with me is a phone call he made to me at a time when it was needed most. His words were full of life!  He will be missed and remembered by all he has touched in life.  For that I have been blessed.

I met Jeff at the Odyssey writing workshop, where he and I were roommates for six weeks. We were friends from that time on. Jeff was always generous with his enthusiasm and encouragement. If I posted some good news on Facebook, he invariably was one of the first to congratulate his "roomie". I'll miss him sorely. My condolences to all who loved him and to all who may not have known him personally but enjoyed his cartoons. I sure hope there's a way to keep them in print. Jeff made this world a brighter place to be.

Can't stop thinking about you, Jeff. I keep waiting for your posts on FB--the world's not so funny without you. I only met you once, but talked with you on the phone, e-mailed, messaged on Facebook--enjoyed sharing the joys and challenges of trying to make a living as creative creatures. Amazing how many lives you touched--and that we EACH thought we were your special friend! I had a vision the other night of you with wings--more cupid than angel--flying above us with a quiver and arrows and wearing a diaper (yes, a diaper). When we were sad, you'd shoot us with a giggle arrow or guffaw arrow or whatever dosage-of-humor arrow we needed at the moment--and suddenly the world felt right again. But, of course, it's NOT. You aren't here to draw that cupid cartoon for me. But please know in your honor, we're all going to PULL A PERT--make a funny, be silly, let our hair down (even if we're bald)--cause laughter is one of the greatest gifts we can give each other--it lets us share our humanity and know for that moment the world is okay because we can laugh together. Thanks, my friend, for so freely sharing the GIFT OF JEFF PERT with all of us--what a gift!

To all of Jeff's family and friends, I am saddened to hear of Jeff's passing. I went to Emerson College with Jeff. He was my R.A. on the 4th floor of 100 Beacon St. and seconds after being my R.A. he became my friend.  He breifly stayed my family in Los Angeles when he moved here and we had many years of phone conversations about everything in the world after that. He never stopped dreaming and creating and being a friend to me.  That I will cherish forever. My deepest sympathies to all of you. What a wonderful son, brother and friend he was.  And the entire state of Maine should be sad to have lost such a fantastic representative for everything Down East and funny.  Mine, as well as my entire family's, sincerest condolences.

To the family:
I send my love to you all. I still can't believe I won't be hearing Jeff's laughter over the phone. I had the pleasure of knowing Jeff for many years when I was still in Maine. His ability to poke fun at all manners of events, political situations and just general life situations was spot on and vastly entertaining to his league of friends. His comics were the delight of many and helped lighten everyone's day.
His compassion and empathy were evident in so many of his friendships and his ability to extend help and support to many in their life challenges. His support, ideas, creativity and spiritual qualities were so valuable.

I brought his humor with to the delight of my young nephews who thought his work was hysterically funny. I got to share that with him and I know for him, to get the "really cool" rating from a young person was something special to him. I will miss you and the world will be a little less funny without you.

Love, Marianna

I met Jeff when he said "yes" to cartooning to the Kotzschmar Organ, working with Rob Richards, Disney organist from CA. Jeff drew his characters to the music on stage at Merrill Auditorium to the delight of families and kids of all ages. He was a delightful person, loved his art form and was a tremendous force in our first attempt to marry the visual art with organ music. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed, but his spirit will live on through his great work.

Dear Mrs. Pert, Judy, Jonathan and Jen (the only one I didn't know):

I was in total disbelief when I flipped a page of my newspaper this morning, and my eyes fell on Jeff's obituary. I just gasped! I have known your family over the years, graduating a year behind Judy, family friends with the Toulouses across the street and playing with the Perts during my family's visits with the Toulouses in childhood, a friendship with Jonathan in my early years of living in Portland. Jeff and I weren't in high school at the same time, but we had some mutual friends, and I followed some of his work and career.

I can't even imagine the level of your grief, and my heart and prayers go out to all of you. I am so deeply sorry for this loss.

I am so sorry to hear about Jeff. He was such a unique soul - he was everyone's friend, as was his dog Woody.  Woody and my Emma played for endless hours, with Woody, of course, outrunning Emma for the ball.  While the dogs were joyfully engaged in play Jeff too had fun - telling stories and entertaining those around us.  He was an amazing story teller.  Being deaf, Jeff was one of those people that wasn't intimidated and knew to look at me when he spoke - no barriers stood between him and a friend - just another one of Jeff's unique ways... everyone, me included, felt a connection with him. with Spring here I have been over to the field looking forward to seeing Woody and Jeff - he will be sadly missed.

I had the great good fortune to work with Jeff at the Odyssey Writing Workshop.  As the director of the program, I worked closely with Jeff and from the beginning was so impressed with the vividness of his writing, the strong details of setting and character, and particularly the sympathetic, believable blue-collar characters in his stories, who often struggled with uncertainty over their actions.  Jeff was such a wonderful presence at the workshop, honest, caring, supportive, and genuine.  I can still see him and hear his voice, as if he's in the room with me. Since the workshop, we stayed in touch, and it was always wonderful to hear about his latest stories and the classroom visits he made to teach cartooning.  He will be deeply missed.

I met Jeff and Bub when I went to work at The Times Record back in the late 80s (as a teenager, mind you!). Had many great conversations with Bub while he was putting together Downeast Living. And whenever Jeff dropped off his work it was always a highlight of the week. His dry observations of the newsroom were as funny as his editorial cartoons, which were hands-down the best part of the paper. Then again, his cartoons were the best part of any paper in Maine, which is why he dominated the state press association awards. My condolences to the Pert family and Jeff's many, many friends.

His light will shine on for generations to come w/ his art and humor for all to see.  I am so beyond grateful I was able to say good bye to him the night he passed away and his "Jeff" humor was there until the end. Jeff and I shared office space at WGME for his last few years with the company. I think I spent more time with him then with my own family during those years. I enjoyed watching his artistic passion make him smile while he multi-tasked his "day job" at the station. We had many spirited debates about life and politics. Jeff was not shy about expressing his opinion. He was also a good friend when we each found ourselves battling health issues and balancing family responsibilities. I was so deeply saddened to learn of his untimely death. He made amazing contributions to the art world and like so many talented artists, those contributions will be his legacy forever. I keep thinking about how encouraging he was of the just-starting-out artists in our group.   To Jeff's cat and dog -  you'll miss Jeff too, but good people will take very good care of you, and Jeff will be watching.  Someday you'll meet him at the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm so deeply sorry to hear about the loss of Jeff.  My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.  His cartoons have been enjoyed by my family for years, even before I made the connection that they were from Jeff Pert, the sister of one of my oldest and dearest friends!  He was way too young to pass. I only hope his family and friends can take comfort from the many pieces of artwork he created throughout his life.  They will be enjoyed by many for years to come.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Jeff's family and friends. His encouragement meant the world to me as I grew as a cartoonist –– I remember feeling starstruck when he wanted to read some of my first comics as a teen, having grown up surrounded by his work. He was an incredibly nice, supportive, and funny person, and I'm very sorry that the world lost him so young. I'm truly grateful to have known him.

I am so sad to hear about Jeff's passing. I was fortunate enough to call him friend. I brainstormed "Dances with Woofs" with him one fun night over dinner.  I had much respect for his journey and his personal growth. He was a keeper. My condolences to his family and friends.

I did not know Jeff that well, but I enjoy his cartoons and it was a pleasure working with him to put his book together. I know that at this time, words can do little to ease the pain. Just know that I am truly sorry for your loss.

To the family of Jeff.......please accept my prayers and sympathy for the passing of Jeff.   I was introduced to his work thru Nan Paradis...his work/cartoons and wit were awesome.  I was given one of his books(Cartoons from Maine) for a gift and will always treasure it. May God bless your family....

Jeff's art work was always 2nd to none. Working with Jeff at LL Bean's I had the opportunity to buy some of his t-shirts early on that he created. I think I still have one or two of them. His humor will be sorely missed by all. My deepest condolences  to his family and close friends...

Jeff and I became friends in high school and our lives crossed many times through the years. He was kind, smart, funny, and authentic. I feel lucky to have known such a good man as a friend.

I’m so glad I got the opportunity to know Jeff. Like so many of his pals, I was drawn to his warmth and sharp wit. I saw him just last weekend, along with Anna and others from our art critique group. He talked about his plans for future projects and I was excited for him. We even talked about one day collaborating on a book. He left too soon, with so much more to give. But he’s not done yet. I know there will come a time when we see work from a new cartoonist inspired by one of Jeff’s school visits. He was and is an inspiration to all of us touched by his humor and spirit. Not everyone will know his name, but his iconic Maine-inspired cartoons will be always be remembered. Especially his classic, much loved, signature “Hey, Bob! How’s the water?” joke! That one will undoubtably give folks a good chuckle for many, many years to come. He was one of a kind. Thanks for making us laugh, buddy. I’m sure gonna miss you.

To my dear friend Jeff,
You will always be in our hearts and creative spirits. We have known each other for a long time, you were a good friend, a lover of animals and of correct grammar (grin). The amount of affection expressed on facebook shows me how much you impacted peoples lives and you will be truly missed by many. May you rest in peace and hope you can continue to do what you love in heaven. I will miss you terribly, your humor and your cartoons! Hugs Letitia

I'm shocked and saddened by Jeff's sudden passing. I saw Jeff last weekend and hoped to connect with him later this week. Often we would walk our dogs together and talk about the business of illustration. We'd talk about the unfortunate need for "B" jobs, his passion for his art and mine for writing. Jeff and I considered getting a space together to help keep each other on task, to make the most of time. His death feels like a message from the universe to do what you love with your whole mind, body and soul. Jeff, I will miss you so much.

Jeff was truly my best friend for the past 25 years.  I will miss our long rambling phone calls and all too infrequent visits.  I know just how many folks will miss him and I especially send my love to all of his family that he loved so much.  It simply won't be the same without Jeff.
